Instagram API Pricing: Costs, Limits, Access

TL;DR
Meta lists no per-call price for the Instagram API. The cost is access: professional accounts, App Review and rate limits. Official sources linked.
Instagram API Pricing: Costs, Limits, Access

Last verified: 14 October 2026. Official API terms change often; every figure below links to the Meta page it came from.

Meta does not publish a price list for the Instagram API: its developer documentation describes access levels, App Review and rate limits, not per-call fees. What the API costs you is access: it only serves Instagram professional (business or creator) accounts, and an app that serves accounts you don't own or manage needs App Review and Business Verification first.

So the real pricing question is which data you need and whose account it belongs to. Below are the official requirements and limits, when the official API is the right tool, and what to do when it isn't.

What the official Instagram API requires

Consumer appsInstagram Basic Display API stopped working on 4 December 2024. Meta: "there will no longer be a set of Instagram APIs for consumer developer apps."Meta developer blog, 4 Sep 2024

The gotcha: your quota depends on reach, not on what you pay

The 24-hour limit is a multiple of the account's impressions. An account whose content is seen a lot gets a large budget; a new or quiet account gets a small one, and there is no plan you can buy to raise it. If you are building analytics for small creators, test your polling schedule against a real low-reach account before you promise refresh rates.

The second limit that surprises people is Hashtag Search: 30 unique hashtags per 7 days per account. That is enough to track a brand's own campaign tags, and not enough for open-ended monitoring across topics.

Third: a permission only covers data the app user created. Meta's overview says there are "a few endpoints that allow apps to access data not created by the app user, but the accessible data is limited and public." There is no endpoint for personal (non-professional) accounts, and no general keyword search.

When the official API is the right choice

Use Meta's API when the accounts are yours or your customers', and they can log in and grant permissions. It is the only route for:

  • Publishing posts, reels and stories
  • Moderating and replying to comments, and private replies
  • Direct messages
  • Insights: reach, impressions and other metrics only the account owner can see

No public-data API can do any of these, because they act on behalf of the account owner. If your product is a scheduler, an inbox or a dashboard for accounts that connect to it, build on the official API and budget for App Review.

When it doesn't fit

The official API can't help when you need data about accounts that will never connect to your app: competitor profiles, creators you are researching, or posts behind a hashtag you don't own. Your options there:

  • Collect public pages yourself. Instagram serves logged-out visitors a limited view of public profiles and posts. Building on that means handling rate limits, blocks, changing page structure, and media URLs that expire.
  • Use a hosted public-data API. Someone else runs the collection and you get JSON. Compare on the fields you need and what a failed call costs you, not only on price per request.

Either way, Instagram's terms apply to how you collect and use the data. Read the Instagram Terms of Use and, if you also use Meta's APIs, the Meta Platform Terms, and check the terms for your use case.

Public Instagram data with Captapi

Captapi returns public Instagram data over REST with one API key, with no Instagram account, OAuth flow or App Review on your side. Credits per call, from our published OpenAPI spec:

Profile: bio, followers, following, post count, verified/v1/instagram/channel-details1
A reel's spoken words as text/v1/instagram/transcript2

A profile lookup:

curl "https://api.captapi.com/v1/instagram/channel-details?url=natgeo" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CAPTAPI_KEY"

Note postCountIsApproximate: Instagram shows large counts rounded ("32K"), and the flag tells you when the number is a rounded display value. imageExpiresAt is when Instagram's signed image URL stops working; download the image before then if you need to keep it (more in why scraped media URLs expire).

What Captapi doesn't return

  • Private accounts. A private profile comes back with isPrivate: true and no posts.
  • Anything only the owner sees: insights, reach, impressions, story viewers, DMs.
  • Write actions: publishing, replying, moderating. That is the official API's job.
  • Follower and following lists.

Everything we return is what Instagram shows publicly. See the full list on the Instagram API overview.

FAQ

Does the Instagram API cost money?

Meta's Instagram Platform documentation lists access levels, App Review and rate limits, and no per-call price. The cost is the work of getting and keeping access: a professional account, App Review and Business Verification for Advanced Access, and token refresh every 60 days.

Can I use the Instagram API with a personal account?

No. The Instagram Platform serves professional (business or creator) accounts only, and Meta ended the Basic Display API for consumer apps on 4 December 2024.

What are the Instagram API rate limits?

For most endpoints, 4800 ร— the account's impressions over a rolling 24 hours, per app and user pair. Business Discovery and Hashtag Search use 200 ร— number of users per hour, and Hashtag Search is capped at 30 unique hashtags per 7 days.

Do I need App Review?

Only for Advanced Access, which you need to serve accounts you don't own or manage. An app that only serves your own account works on Standard Access.

Can I get data about an account that hasn't connected to my app?

Through the official API, only public fields of other business or creator accounts, via Business Discovery. For personal accounts or broader public data, you need a public-data route such as the Instagram Profile API.

Try it on your own data: get a free API key. You get 100 credits after you verify your email.
